ROLE OVERVIEW
PURPOSE OF JOB
The General Counsel will support the Chief Group Counsel in providing strategic legal oversight across the JTC Group and will lead or support the delivery of clear, pragmatic legal advice on disputes, documentation, regulatory matters, risk, corporate transactions and broader business operations across relevant jurisdictions.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
- Deputise for and support the Chief Group Counsel across jurisdictions, including contributing to the leadership, development and coaching of other legal team members.
- Provide strategic and pragmatic legal advice to Group stakeholders, including senior management, client directors and business teams, across corporate, funds and private client activities. This includes support on disputes and litigation, insolvency and enforcement matters, corporate transactions, data protection, HR, operational change, regulatory issues, complaints handling and other business-critical legal matters.
- Provide legal input at risk escalation forums and support the management of material legal and regulatory issues.
- Draft, review and advise on client servicing and internal legal documentation, including supporting the development, maintenance and improvement of a Group-wide precedent library.
- Advise on the interpretation, negotiation and amendment of existing legal and client-facing documentation.
- Deliver or support internal training, legal updates and thought leadership materials on relevant legal, regulatory and best practice developments.
- Engage with external parties, including regulators, external counsel, intermediaries, clients and service partners, and support tenders and wider business development activity where legal input is required.
- Monitor legislative and regulatory developments affecting the Group’s service offering and help translate those developments into practical guidance for the business.
- Contribute to Group-wide commercial initiatives by providing solution-focused legal support that enables business objectives while protecting the Group’s legal and regulatory position.
- Maintain high standards of compliance with applicable legal, regulatory, risk and AML requirements, together with adherence to JTC’s values and expected behaviours.
- Undertake other responsibilities reasonably requested by line management, consistent with the seniority and scope of the role.
ESSENTIAL REQUIREMENTS
- Qualified lawyer in the UK and/or Jersey with at least 4 years’ post-qualification experience.
- Demonstrable experience in litigation, disputes and risk management within a legal environment.
- Strong ability to absorb complex information quickly and provide clear, pragmatic and authoritative advice, including in high-impact or time-sensitive situations.
- Sound judgment and the ability to operate effectively at both detailed and strategic levels, adapting legal input to the needs of the situation and stakeholder.
- A collaborative and adaptable approach, with strong technical rigour, openness to change, commitment to continuous learning and a willingness to contribute positively to a high-performing team culture.
