Corporate Volunteering in Mauritius: How JTC colleagues Supported The Squint Project

Through our JTC Gives community programme, colleagues across our global network support causes that make a meaningful difference in their local communities.

An impactful example of corporate volunteering in Mauritius is JTC’s support for The Squint Project, an initiative delivered alongside the Rotary Club of Bagatelle to help children and families affected by strabismus – a condition commonly known as squint – through specialist consultations and strabismus surgery in Mauritius.

What is The Squint Project?

Strabismus remains a condition that is not always widely understood, and many families may not realise that squint treatment for children is available, or that it can often be treated or corrected. By improving access to specialist consultations and strabismus surgery in Mauritius, The Squint Project is helping to raise awareness of the condition while also delivering life-changing care to those who need it most.

Expanding to Rodrigues Island: a new milestone

Now in its fourth year, the initiative continues to expand its reach and impact. This year marked an important milestone, with the project extending to Rodrigues Island for the first time. Supported by specialist doctors from India, the programme provided around 200 consultations and at least 50 surgeries, mainly for children, helping to improve outcomes for families across both islands.

Corporate volunteering in Mauritius: JTC colleagues on the ground

Alongside JTC’s sponsorship of the initiative, colleagues from our Mauritius office took part in direct corporate volunteering in Mauritius, supporting the project on the ground, as part of a wider community effort. In the early hours of the morning, team members came together to prepare sandwiches and refreshments for children and their families. At the hospital, colleagues assisted with registration, helped guide families through the consultation process and supported efforts to create a calm and welcoming environment for those attending appointments.

Volunteers also spent time with children through simple but meaningful activities, including handing out treats and stickers, playing games and encouraging drawing, helping to ease anxiety and make the experience more comfortable for families throughout the day.

Every contribution played a part in supporting the success of the initiative and in helping to deliver practical care and comfort to children and families during their treatment journey.

A sincere thank you to everyone involved in supporting The Squint Project.
