“I changed my career path completely.”

What was the opportunity?

I moved from London to Jersey as part of a trial graduate programme which gave me the opportunity to work in different departments of the Group – both client facing and operational. I worked as an Assistant Administrator in all three divisions – Funds, Corporate and Fiduciary – as well as learning the ropes in Group Development which, at the time was focusing on the implementation of JTC’s acquisition plans and finally moving to the Business Development and Marketing team before returning to London.
Whilst working in the client administration part of the business, I was also seconded out to our Luxembourg office to spend a few weeks assisting the team out there.

How did JTC support you in all of this?

They were brilliant in their attitude and approach and, certainly for the two-week Luxembourg secondment, all I had to do was pick up my passport and get on the plane there and back. Travel, accommodation and expenses were all sorted by the Group HR department.
With my nine months in Jersey (which was originally only supposed to be three months but I fell in love with the place and extended my time there), I was given initial assistance in finding somewhere to live. Additionally, the rotation process between divisions and departments was very smoothly managed and my progress and well-being were regularly reviewed – I was very well looked after!

How did your family and friends feel about your move?

They all encouraged me to go and grab the opportunity – probably with the ulterior motive of having the excuse to come and visit me – especially in the sunshine months! And in fact, it wasn’t just me who realised what a great place Jersey is – my parents loved it so much they actually moved there permanently. Almost timing it with my return to London funnily enough.

What were your lessons learnt along the way?

Naturally there were up and down days but the Team JTC people around me were always so kind (I had plenty of meals cooked for me by colleagues who became friends) when I was missing home. My confidence really grew with the experience and I’ve become much more open to different opportunities that come my way now.

What was the big highlight?

Meeting someone extra special who kindly agreed to be my wife!

Any downside?

It was so hard having to leave Jersey to return to London – but having said that I am really happy to be back in the full swing of city life – and it’s my turn to take the summer holiday break at my parents’ house now.

Why do you think the international experience that Gateway offers is important?

You really gain a new perspective on absolutely everything! Undertaking the rotation in Jersey changed my career path completely and I also met all the colleagues I now work with on a daily basis and got to know them well rather than trying to establish a relationship with them over the phone or on email. I travel back and forth to Jersey regularly for meetings and training so get to stay in touch often and having shared points of reference really helps this. Equally, they are also able to understand the similarities and differences of the work the London team undertakes.
