Next Gen Superyacht Ownership: Legacy, Innovation and the Future

The themes explored at last year’s Superyacht Forum (SYF) resonate strongly with the goals of our new partnership with SDA Bocconi School of Management. The Family Legacy Monitor will elevate the concept of legacy and support the next generation in preparing for their future responsibilities, including those related to luxury assets like superyachts.

This timely initiative closely aligns with many of the challenges and opportunities highlighted at last year’s SYF, where Victoria Blackburn, Director at JTC Private Office joined the panel session, ‘Next Gen Superyacht Ownership: Redefining the Future’. Here, industry experts brought into focus the challenges on the evolving profile of owners, as well as new demands on design, service and sustainability.

A new generation of leaders are poised to not only inherit but evolve and innovate extraordinary family legacies. This could include not only significant wealth, but also cherished luxury assets like yachts. As we look ahead, it’s clear that empowering the next generation through education, strategic planning and open dialogue will be essential in navigating the future of luxury asset ownership.

Rethinking Who Owns and Why

The profile of superyacht owners is evolving. The emerging generation of owners is more diverse in age, gender, background and values than ever before. Some are new to yachting, some propelled by accelerated success after the pandemic, and they bring with them unique expectations and aspirations, not only around luxury asset ownership, but for impact and purpose. The rise in female ownership and influence is also having an impact on how these assets are designed and used.

Evolving Demands: Self-sufficiency and New Destinations

Owners are increasingly seeking greater independence and self-sufficiency in their yachts. They desire vessels that provide flexibility, support extended voyages and can easily adapt to dynamic, modern lifestyles so people can explore well beyond traditional destinations like the Mediterranean and establish new “safe havens” around the world.

Reputational Impact and Sustainability Alignment

One of the clearest messages from both the SYF and our ongoing research is that sustainability needs to evolve further. Some owners are still more concerned with operational budgets, but a good number realise that external perception and making an impact are also key with the ownership of these types of assets. Next Gen owners are setting a higher bar for environmental responsibility, and they expect shipyards and service providers to not only innovate in design, but also fully align with their values around green materials, energy efficiency and stewardship of the oceans.

Today, a superyacht is not just a symbol of personal success, it’s also a vehicle for legacy and reputation. Owners are drawn to brands and builders with authentic stories and enduring values, and they want to ensure their own family’s legacy is woven through every aspect of the ownership experience. Storytelling and authenticity are guiding purchasing decisions as much as technical innovation or size.

Through our Family Legacy Monitor with SDA Bocconi School of Management, we’re helping clients and the industry to navigate change, seize new opportunities and build legacies that endure.
