Name: Josie Cuff
Title: Senior Manager – Tax Compliance and Regulatory Reporting
Where did you previously live and where did you relocate to?

Having lived in Jersey for just under five years, I relocated to Edinburgh for 12 months before making my return to Jersey last month – a double ended Gateway it’s fair to say!

What was the opportunity and why was it appealing to you?

The opportunity was to business partner Employer Solutions from an AEOI (FATCA/CRS) perspective to make sure the integration of processes, policies and procedures was smooth following the acquisition in April 2021. It really appealed to me as I knew straight off that it was a great opportunity to understand the product proposition of Employer Solutions and gain exposure as to how a large integration works in a post-acquisition environment. I have also always loved Edinburgh as a place to visit and really wanted the opportunity to explore the city as more than just a passing visitor.

How supportive was JTC during your transition?

Being a relatively new employee of JTC at the time, it was great to see the support and organisation which went into the move, from HR to the Business Management team in Edinburgh who made me feel so welcome from day one. Also, the support for re-locating back to Jersey was just as smooth.

What is the No. 1 thing to see/do in Edinburgh?

It’s so difficult to pin down one thing!

I found absolute joy in attending live gigs and comedy shows which were so accessible and after the past few years we have all experienced, there really was nothing more rewarding than seeing a full room of happy people again! One of my closest friends in the city does stand-up so it was also great to see her in action (safely from the third row…).

A few other recommendations include:

  • Catching the sunset at Calton Hill
  • Climbing Arthur’s Seat
  • Beach BBQs at Portobello beach
  • Enjoying the delights of the Scottish Premier League (my tears really were cryin’ last season…)
  • Dog walking around the Meadows with a signature hot chocolate in hand
  • Cocktails at Nor Loft for the view
  • Food must visits are: Wings, Chez Jules, the Witchery and the Fish Market
  • For the wild at heart, Ballie McBallerson has recently opened, it’s where I realised I could totally be an Instagram influencer in my spare time…
How did your family and friends feel about the move?

It was really exciting for my friends and family. My partner Isaac and our two dogs loved the chance to explore Edinburgh and make new friends (of the two and four legged variety). Our friends also took full advantage of visiting as much as possible!

What lessons did you learn from this experience?

Always say ‘yes’ to experience new things (this does not include drinking Buckfast – always say no!). It’s really easy to over-think situations and find reasons not to take advantage of opportunities available because change is involved and that’s uncomfortable – but it really is how we evolve and grow as individuals; the more we are exposed to different people, environments and experiences.

What was the big highlight?

Definitely getting engaged outside Edinburgh Castle – it has linked us to our favourite city forever! However, I’d advise future individuals planning to propose to their significant others to avoid darkness, torrential rain and two drenched dogs being present.

From a work perspective, I really enjoyed acting as a programme facilitator for the Career Ready programme. Career Ready is a social mobility charity which partners with organisations to provide internships to 16-17 year olds from the local area. Through my role I had the opportunity to make sure our intern Craig had a successful four weeks with us. It was great to watch him grow in confidence and see how JTC is positively contributing to local communities.

Any downsides?

Unfortunately Edinburgh doesn’t stand up against the unmatchable karaoke scene Jersey has to offer…

Why do you think the international experience that Gateway offers is important?

Gaining international experience is such a great opportunity and what is unique from a JTC perspective is the support and tools available to make it happen – it is such a smooth process, with so many jurisdictions to choose from!

What advice would you give someone considering a career at JTC?

Do it! JTC provides a great platform for individuals to be part of something big and to achieve it as a collective. With JTC’s bold growth ambitions it is such an exciting time to be part of the journey. If you enjoy varied, fast-paced working whilst making some great friends along the way; it is the place for you.
